How weekly tax works
Your employer withholds tax each week using the ATO’s Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding tables. Those tables are designed so that, over a full year, the tax withheld matches the tax you owe on your annual income. That’s why this calculator multiplies your weekly pay by 52, applies the yearly brackets and divides by 52 again.
Weekly take-home = (annual pay − annual tax − Medicare) ÷ 52
Casual and part-time workers
If your hours change week to week, your weekly tax will too. A big week can push more tax out of that pay, but at tax time it’s your total income for the year that counts. Use the tax return calculator to see if you’re on track for a refund.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax do I pay on $1,000 a week?
$1,000 a week is $52,000 a year. In 2026-27 a resident pays about $133 a week in tax and Medicare, taking home about $867.
How much tax is taken out of $1,500 a week?
About $298 a week in income tax and Medicare levy, leaving roughly $1,202. With a HECS debt, about $24 more is withheld.
Is weekly tax worked out on the yearly amount?
Yes. Australian tax is based on your yearly income, so this calculator annualises your weekly pay (× 52), applies the tax brackets, and divides back to a week.
Why is my weekly payslip tax a little different?
Employers use the ATO weekly withholding tables, which round amounts. The difference is usually a few dollars a week and is settled in your tax return.
Should I claim the tax-free threshold?
Claim it from only one employer, normally the one paying you the most. If you claim it twice you'll owe tax at the end of the year.
